CONTACT &BEYOND

The area of Savute lies within a wild and remote corner of the Chobe National Park, south of the Chobe River. Almost desert–like in comparison to the lush Chobe riverfront, Savute lies within an area of open savanna grassland through which a dry river channel experiences heavy seasonal rains on occasion. Several artificial waterholes provide much needed water features to this dry part of the park and some incredible wildlife viewing opportunities.

The vast landscape of the Chobe National Park boasts some of the largest wildlife concentrations in Africa, including that of the Kalahari elephant, which is said to be the largest in the world (approximately 120 000). Close encounters with an elephant bull are almost certain at Savute.

MORE THAN I WAS EXPECTING

MORE THAN I WAS EXPECTING

“Savute Under Canvas was definitely a lot more than I was expecting. We were so impressed by the friendly staff. Sam, our guide, was a good guy. We loved sitting out by the fire at night and I couldn’t believe the bucket showers. The bucket showers and toilets weren’t rustic at all … AND we had hot water after each safari in the morning and the afternoon. I mean, it was great! The food was also so great!”

The meals were so elaborate! I think Savute was a really good camp, I don’t see how you could change anything. And the best part of the trip was actually when we left and we had to clear the animals off the runway in order for the plane to land, and an elephant got a little agitated with this and actually charged us, which I thought was really exciting! It was an absolutely amazing trip and I honestly don’t think anything could ever beat that trip. I still rave about it today and I’ll probably rave about the trip forever.

VANISHING WILD DOGS - 16 March 2012
Today on our last day in Savute I was lucky enough to find three wild dogs on the hunt. Unfortunately for us, the Savute Park rules do not allow us to leave the roads to go off road through the thick and close standing Kalahari Apple Leaf, so we...

IMPALAS WIN THE CHASE - 10 March 2012
In the early morning I suggested that we would have a closer look at the area around the Savute Airstrip. And what a lucky guess it turned out to be! Not long after we arrived I spotted a cheetah lurking by the end of the Airstrip trying to get...
